Ribbon jumper

I wanted to try and make something rather like a Monsoon garment for my daughter- she has a beautiful pair of jeans and a skirt with heavy ribboning around the bottom. This is what a came up with.

Jaeger Merino DK, Ann Budd's book for basic measurements but with my own additions. I bought the ribbon mainly from Cheap Fabrics, and some from John Lewis.

Before long I hope to be organised enough not to keep adding things a teeny bit at a time, but for now bear with me, please...

I received a copy of Fiona Ellis's Inspired Cable Knits yesterday. I had read quite mixed reviews, but loved the look of the hooded cable jacket that is featured on the Knit Picks site. It was worth it for that alone- I will definitely knit this, and am planning my yarn already (maybe Rowan Wool Cotton- hmmm). One of the bad reviews I read criticised the small size of the charts, but they seem as good as most to me, and in any case it's not exactly hard to make a larger copy of a chart. I often do this so that I can annotate as I go along anyway. I was less keen on the philosophical musings at the start of each pattern, possibly because I'm too British. There were several other patterns in there I liked, and I will probably make the Cables Unplugged jumper, not least because I have loads of Summer Tweed I bought for my doomed attempt at Alchemy Yarns Rockstar cardigan. Boy, that's a badly written pattern- big disappointment. Anyway, I digress. There's also a lovely colourful child's jumper. I guess what I really like, and what makes it worth the money, is that even on patterns I probably wouldn't knit (because I don't like the overall look) there are interesting features that I will probably incorporate into other patterns at some point- there's a kind of double neck on one pattern that I particularly like, and good use of small areas of contrasting colours.

My first design, complete with wonky heart shape. I like it overall though- mainly knitted with Jaeger Shetland Aran (sadly discontinued) from the lovely Janette on eBay. The multi-coloured parts are Lorna's Laces in Childsplay.

This is not intended to be a "real" blog. I would just like to have somewhere to put my thoughts down about knitting books and yarns, and to collect pictures of finished articles. Maybe even a few patterns.
